the cutting of the cord - febuary 2026

‘ The Cutting of the cord’
91.4 x 61 cm
Acrylic on canvas

I wanted to combine the work I had done in first term with the passion I found while making my ‘ King in Yellow’ painting.
I kept with my limited colour palette of Red, Pink, Yellow and white, and it was an active decision  not to use any black in the painting as  I wanted the shade of crimson I was using to be the darkest colour on the canvas.

The Title is a reference to the cutting of the umbilical cord during childbirth, however there is noticeably no child in the painting. The figure itself is titled 'eostre' who was a Celtic goddess of fertility and is widely believed to be the original patron of easter before Europe converted to Christianity. I chose this figure as she thematically represents the colonisation of feminine divinity through the patriarchal family lineage that has its roots in Christian ideology.

the flowers around the border are snowdrops and mistletoe, two flowers which are both toxic for humans.
